We buy a lot of commercial items to jobs and the 30 character material limit is often too short for us to fit the manufacturer and their part number together without losing important part data. For example, SMC #SS5V1-W10S1EAND-
12B-N3-D218070A gets chopped off missing the last eight characters.
Agreed! I'm ok with the field length of the material ID, however, the description line needs to be expanded to at least 50-60 characters to improve readability, and allow room for important identifying details.
4+ year with no update on one of the most popular idea....#hopeless
JobBoss, I think you should in-
Sorry, ran out of characters.

I want to like JobBoss. It has so many great concepts. But this issue is a deal breaker. I can't shorten material and part descriptions to 30 characters. I could live with 64. but why not make it 256 like most of the windows fields allow these days? It would allow for much more flexibility.
The additional notes box is a nice idea. but it doesn't print on orders. Really, where do they end up anyway. Besides it adds clicks to entering and correcting data. That is what i'm trying to reduce.
we are still constantly running into this issue with raw material.
our format is Size Shape Spec, we have even removed spaces which makes things harder to read but still only helps to a point when we have dual certified tubing we can easily hit 32 characters.
JobBOSS is so flexible though... we can just come up with short unique material IDs that mean nothing and then keep an excel sheet around to reference what material and revision it actually is!
i am having the same issue with material id and description
there should be no limit on part number or description. this is not MS DOS 8 bit computing. its maddening and completely unnecessary to have to truncate part numbers and descriptions. how one company operates can be different than another and to arbitrarily pick character limits is absurd.
This request is over 2 years old, this means it will never get done.
NEED LONGER DESCRIPTION!!! THIS 30 CHARACTER LIMIT IS GARBAGE.
Why not make it 10,000 characters then our reports that doubled in pages going from 10x to 30x characters could take up a page for each line.
Agreed! However, the material ID is not supposed to be an essay, but a improvement to 40 or 45 characters would definitely help. The description is could operate on 60 characters as the main purpose of that field is to describe, and a few more characters would certainly help!
Yes please! The Material ID, Description and Detail ID should all be lengthened. Wide wide format screens, a lot of additional space for these characters should be available and visible at all times. Instead of the Material " Internal Note" field being hidden, It would be fantastic to see a preview and or permanently expanded view of this note without having to click on the note. There is plenty of screen real estate. Perhaps the calculator field could even be permanently be expanded/ visible. It would save so many clicks and also help avoid entry errors that are hidden once the field is closed.
How about a seperate field for mfg. Plus the longer part number field. I don't think grouping together works. The separate mfg field is needed in other areas such as invoices for international shipments
The material ID now allows more characters than before, but then it cuts them off when you print your purchase order, so really it's pointless. What is the point of being allowed more room to type 42 characters if the vendor can only read 27 of those 42 characters?
Hi Jason - when JobBOSS for Windows was created, it was a design decision made with the number of characters at the time. Access DB allows for a larger number of characters so it wasn’t a limitation from that perspective. We attempted at scoping changing IDs in the past however, we realized that it would have been a larger undertaking due to the ID lengths affecting the various modules it appears in along with its usage in all the reports. We are planning on implementing larger field lengths in phases in the near future, so be on the lookout for an update!
Maybe development can weigh in on this. With the VARCHAR datatype max at 8000 on modern sql server, why limit it for this, or any text field, at all? Maybe it's a holdover from Access DB support?
I don't want part numbers becoming excessively long. 50 characters is too much. What's MORE important is the Description. That should be longer than the part number. A "part number" is NOT a description, it shouldn't be used in that way. Something is wrong with your part numbering system if you really NEED 50 or 60 characters.
AS WELL AS THE DESCRIPTION!
